Time to close out the variety pack from Goose Island called the Chicago Craft Case. The first 3 beers are in every edition of this sample pack, but the 4th is a rotating seasonal, and in my version I have Goose Island Mild Winter. Mild Winter is an American Mild Ale with a 5.6% Alcohol By Volume (ABV). Mild Ales are an English style of beer, and there isn't an American version listed on BA yet, but I will go with what the brewer calls its beer.
Goose Island Mild Winter is a darker brown colored beer, moderately hazed, with a small, short-lived tan head. A medium amount of lace remains behind on the glass.
The nose is largely centered around dark malts, which are pretty roasted. Also present are some dark fruit notes, and a hint of rye.
I was wondering if I was imagining the rye in the scent, but it is present in the taste as well, and provides a bit of spice. Some dark malts with a light roast provide a solid base, with some fruit in the middle before a moderately bitter finish, mainly from the roasted malt, although there is a light grassy hop which contributes just a bit as well. The mouth is medium to full and fairly highly carbonated.
I don't know if I have had Goose Island Mild Winter before this year, but it is a pretty tasty winter seasonal beer. Mild Ales aren't something you see every day, and as is usually the case, this American version has a bit more oomph than the traditional English examples, although you will occasionally see them get up to 6% ABV.
