New Glarus Wisconsin Belgian Red has been on the BA top 100 since I first found that site a long time ago. It is a Fruit Beer with 4% Alcohol By Volume (ABV). New Glarus Brewing Company is generally regarded as a top-notch brewery, and Wisconsin Belgian Red is usually regarded as their best beer.
New Glarus Wisconsin Belgian Red is hazy light brown colored beer, which glows a bright red when held to a light source. A medium, bubbly tan colored head tops it off following a cascade effect, and it leaves a small amount of lacing behind.
The nose erupts with a tart and sour cherry, with some light malts and a touch of wheat trying to make themselves known as well.
Tart cherries open the taste and electrify the tongue as the beer rolls over it. Barley and wheat comprise the next layer, followed by hints of oak. Just a bit of a leafy hop rounds it out. The mouth is light to medium and moderately carbonated.
If you do not like cherries, I can safely say that you will not enjoy New Glarus Wisconsin Belgian Red, since this beer explodes with them. Everyone else will find a great tasting fruit beer, which might well be the best of its style.
It had been a while since I had Wisconsin Belgian Red, and I had forgotten how good it is. A perfect dessert beer, and one deserving of its reputation.
