Oskar Blues Brewery is known for leading the way in canning craft beers, which is something that you see more and more of these days. While they are not currently available here in Minnesota, I got a can of their Scotch Ale with 8% Alcohol By Volume (ABV), which is called Oskar Blues Old Chub. This will be the first time that I have tried this beer, so I am looking forward to it.
Oskar Blues Old Chub is a dark brown beer, with just a slight haze and a fair amount of rising bubbles. A small tan head tops off the beer, and leaves a medium amount of lacing on the glass.
A mix of chocolate and caramel malts makes of the majority of the scent, with just a faint whiff of alcohol and a dab of smoke.
The woody smoke picks up some strength in the taste, following the thick caramel malts which have just a bit of chocolate mixed in. Some vanilla, fruits both light and dark and just a hint of spicy alcohol provide additional layers to the taste. The mouth is fairly full and has a medium amount of carbonation.
Oskar Blues Old Chub has a bit of an oak-aged feel to it, but I don't think it was actually in barrels. As is the norm with Scotch Ales, Old Chub is totally focused on the malts, but these "barrel-like" aspects distinguish Oskar Blues' take on the style from many that you will come across. Good beer and worth a try if its sold in your market.
Oskar Blues Old Chub : B+
