Samuel Adams Dark Depths is another one of the recently released limited edition beers from Boston Beer Company. Dark Depths is a cross between a Baltic Porter and an American IPA with 7.6% Alcohol By Volume (ABV). So far I have enjoyed these single-run beers from Sam Adams, and like to see them breaking the mold a little bit and letting their brewers run wild.
Samuel Adams Dark Depths is a black bodied beer, all of which emits a ruby glow when held to a light. A large tan head tops the beer after a brief cascade effects, and sheets of lacing coat the glass.
The nose is a pretty intriguing mix of black malts with some pungent, resinous and citrus hops.
The smell translates pretty well to the taste, which opens with a smooth black malt foundation. A pretty complex mix of hops follows in the malts' wake, with a leafy and earthy noble hop paving the way for the more prominent citrus and piney/resinous hops, which finish fairly bitter. The mouth is pretty full and smooth.
The latest trend in American craft brewing is combining IPA hop profiles with malt profiles of different styles, and Samuel Adams Dark Depths is another good entry in that trend. It definitely has the smooth malt profile of a porter, and has a lot of the hops that are used in the Sam Adams Latitude 48 IPA.
So far my favorite limited edition beer from Samuel Adams has been their Cinder Bock, but Dark Depths is a nice, smooth drinking and nice tasting entry in that line of beers. You should check it out while you can.
Samuel Adams Dark Depths : B+
