Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dark Beer Review

Six months in and no Dunkelweizen reviews on this website yet. Time to fix that with a beer from my favorite German brewery, Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephaner, called Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dark. This beer has a 5.3% Alcohol By Volume, and is found year round in beer stores that know what they're doing.  Dunkel means "dark" in German, and Dunkelweizens are Hefes with darker malts.

Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dark is a very cloudy, brown colored beer, topped by a large off-white head. A few flakes of yeast float throughout the body, and a web of lacing remains on the glass.

The nose is great, and sports an expertly blended caramel malt with a classic German Hefeweizen portfolio. Lots of wheat, bubblegum, spicy clove, some dark fruits for good measure. It's one of those beers that you can sit and sniff for a while.

The taste is even better, with lightly toasted malts followed by a plethora of German Hefe elements. Banana, clove, bubblegum, yeast, just a touch of leafy hop, and some fruit notes lingering in the background. The mouth is a touch fuller than medium, and fairly active on the tongue.

If you like Hefes and haven't had Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier, your first step is to go grab one of those. While you're at it, pick up a bottle of Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dark, which is almost as good and is another outstanding German wheat beer.
